Quote1Octus, why didn't you tell us you had these abilities?Quote2
―Lance to Octus.

Lance is one of the main protagonists in Sym-Bionic Titan. On Galaluna, Lance was the most talented soldier in his military unit and also the most rambunctious. The King of Galaluna chose Lance as his daughter’s protector and now Lance must work to ensure the safety of the princess and also seize this newfound opportunity to clear his family name. Naturally, the rebellious attitude that caused so much trouble back home is exactly the reason why he’s so cool at Sherman High. He’s suddenly found himself extremely popular and doesn’t understand why the more he pushes away, the more popular he becomes.

Appearance

Lance is a tall male with black hair and black eyes, he is primarily well built due to his extensive training growing up and continued training on Earth. Having no interest in fashion or his appearance, he will typically leave his hair messy, while primarily focusing on wearing clothes that are simple and easy to move around in. His preferred attire consists of a greyish blue shirt, blue jeans, a dark brown belt with silver buckle, and brown boots. On occasion, he will wear a royal blue hoodie. Only on special occasions will he be willing to wear a proper black suit and tie and style his hair, but will typically mess his hair and wear the suit and tie in a looser fashion not long after, in order to not feel constricted. The devise he uses to activate his Manus is on his right wrist.

Personality

With an inherent disregard for authority, Lance is often lost in his own angst and turmoil. Only on the battlefield does he come alive, always thirsting for the victory that will somehow imbue his life with true meaning. Although Lance's rebellious and troublesome nature often caused him much turmoil back on Galaluna, it is this very personality that almost instantly makes him one of the most popular students at Sherman High School on Earth, making the entire student body love him to the point of greeting him every morning.

Unlike most other students, he has no interest in the benefits of his popularity, and tries to distance himself from everyone in an attempt to stop their attempts to gain his attention. He becomes confused upon realizing that despite his efforts to ignore everyone around him, he only continues to rise in the social hierarchy. In a normal situation, Lance is laid back, and not one to openly display his emotions unless he is in the midst of a battle. Lance shows signs of a self-loathing complex, seeming to stem from the day his father vanished. Even to this day, Lance will still wake up at 2:00 a.m. due to the fact that it was the time his father would return from work to spend some quality time with him. Earlier in the series, he is shown to be very paranoid, such as assuming a crying baby or a dog could be considered a threat.

Lance enjoys sparing and anything he considers to be primitive when compared to what he has seen or experienced on Galaluna, such as street cars, heavy metal concerts and unorganized rigorous activities, such as Octus's willingness to drive through a more rigorous course. Lance does not consider training work and is perplexed by other people saying it is. In the episode, Disenfranchised, it is shown that Lance also has some love for music, being able to play guitar and make it in a band called Disenfranchised. Sadly, he was kicked out of the band as the main members believed Lance was attracting the wrong attention for their group due to his popularity in school.

Despite his seemingly lone wolf attitude, he has often been shown to have a brighter mood. In many instances, he is seen smiling and engaging in simple conversations with people he is willing to talk to and feel comfortable around, such as with the Disenfranchised band and Kristin. His most sociable and relaxed moments tend to be with both Octus and Ilana, whom he has grown to view as his family rather than members of a mission, becoming very protective of both of them the more they all stay together, and being more open about himself to them the more he realizes they are willing to stay beside him and listen to him. Lance is not afraid of many things, however, having now viewed Ilana and Octus as his new family, he is fearful of them getting hurt and potentially losing the both of them, something which has even haunted him in a nightmare. Over time, Lance regularly comes to terms with his insubordinate behavior through Octus and Ilana's help, and the negative effects it can truly cause to the people around him, thus encouraging him to try and learn how to make up for his behavior and mistakes.

History

Early life

Little Lance in Shadows of Youth 01

A young Lance was left after his father's assumed death.

Lance's life was difficult when his father disappeared. With no other family to care for Lance, the King and the then-heroic General Modula made plans to transfer him to the Galaluna Military Academy. They hoped that the youngster would become a great soldier there, but more significantly, that he would be surrounded by friends.

Baron, a student at the military academy, was a frequent bully to Lance, utilizing Lance's school-wide esteem and reputation to degrade him. Out of terror, his roommate, Arthur, abandons him upon realizing that Lance will only continue to draw Baron's wrath. As a result of the students and the teachers treating him like he is nothing but a nuisance, Lance was driven to train in order to show himself he is far more capable than anyone thinks. He eventually became the youngest student at the time to get the "Medal of Excellence," earning him the respect of both his teachers and peers in a single day, something which infuriates Baron even more as he deemed the medal something that was his right to have before the end of the year. On the day Lance was to get his medal, Baron assaults' him with laser guns, aiming to outright murder him. After their fight results in them taking control of the Manus and causing intense damage to the school, Lance's reputation is once again tarnished as he is blamed for the destruction.

In the school's jail, Baron made one last crack at Lance about how he didn't have a father to bail him out like him. The King then bailed Lance out in order for him to spend the summer fixing the damages the fight caused. Upon realizing that no one would ever listen to him and instead only focus on the accusations against him, Lance's personality takes a drastic transformation. Lance abandons his once happy personality and becomes a loner with a track for insubordination, refusing to listen to others and developing a self-loathing complex as he struggles finding a purpose to his life after finally accepting that his father was never coming back.

Escape from Galaluna

As an adult, in battle he becomes as reckless as he is amazing. Suicidal tactics and near-crazy stunts were constant moves he relied on. Because of this, his superiors refused to promote him above a corporal since he could potentially get his subordinate killed, but are willing to recognize that his skill was the best out of all of them. After some time in the army, Lance and his unit were placed in charge of saving hostages from the Mutraddi on one of Galaluna's moons. Lance disobeyed orders not to engage the enemy and entered the building anyway. Inside he found all the hostages dead and overheard the Mutraddi planning an invasion with a mysterious figure, Modula .

Despite his discovery, none believe him, instead, his superior blames him for the hostages' deaths. After Lance fights his superior in anger, he is restrained, his armor is confiscated and he is placed under arrest. Lance pleaded for the King to listen to him, but the King refused to believe him until it was too late. With the invasion, Lance discovered that his superior was a traitor and after a long fencing battle, he killed the traitor and saved the royal family while increasing the strength of the defense. Realizing it was a grave mistake for not listening to Lance in the first place, the King abides by Lance's suggestion to leave Galaluna. The King gives Lance a special Manus unit, promotes him to Ilana's protector and sends him to Earth with Ilana and Octus.

Abilities

Galalunian combat skills, piloting skills and weapons expertise

Lance is proficient at combat as a result of his years of training on Galaluna. Unlike most, Lance had learned to harness his skills and is quick to adapt to almost any fighting environment. In addition to his fighting skills, Lance was also trained to pilot advanced forms of machinery, as a result, he is capable of driving a car on Earth with ease and quickly understands which controls on Solomon's ship are meant to launch attacks. Lance has knowledge of a variety of weapons which he can conjure in titan form to fight the Aliens attacking Earth.

Manus

Manus

Lance's armor.

When the situation demands it, Lance has the ability to activate a device on his wrist, which creates a powerful armored exoskeleton called Manus (ironically, this is the Latin term for "hand"). While utilizing the machine, Lance can use a variety of weapons for attack and defense, such as grenades, missiles, chain-swords, and electro-spears.

The Sym-Bionic Titan

Lance in the Titan

Lance can combine his powers with those of Ilana and Octus to create a more powerful machine, the Sym-Bionic Titan. However, it takes all three of their cooperation in order for the giant to efficiently work, let alone attack. He is known as the 'body' of the Sym-Bionic Titan.

Relationships

Ilana

Initially, Lance was unsatisfied with his orders to watch over and protect Ilana, but he chose to follow those orders and became extremely overprotective of Ilana. At first the two are subject to bickering with one another, and it has become one of Octus's many duties to break up fights between the two. This makes their relationship practically brother and sister like they pretend to be, although it is more like a sibling rivalry relationship between the two of them. This may be partially due to the fact that the two of them have clashing personalities; Ilana's being more honest and optimistic, while Lance displays more of a trouble-making, rebellious mind. As time goes by, they become more understanding of each other and learn to care for one another to the point of seeing each other as family. While Ilana is described as the "heart" of the group, Lance is described as the "body". Although Lance was hesitant to treat Ilana as anything but a princess whom he was assigned to protect, their growing bond had allowed him to take note of Ilana's struggles from being separated from her home and the only family she had, her father, something Lance had also experienced growing up but was something Ilana was subjected to just as abruptly. Throughout the season, Lance attempts to express kindness towards Ilana as best he can to try and make up for his mistakes and wrongful behavior, such as purchasing the castle globe she found in the furniture store and trying to abide by her requests to be more involved with others despite his antisocial tendencies. Upon realizing Ilana's desperate attempts to replicate the harvest festival dance to relive her happy times on Galaluna, Lance steps in for the King to provide Ilana the dance she desperately wished to have with her father. Lance is often embarrassed by Ilana's attempts to unify people on Earth for a cause, and while he is willing to support her efforts at times, such as encouraging the student body to consider adding healthier foods to the cafeteria menu in "The Phantom Ninja", other times he tries to refrain her from overcommitting and saying things that will only result in embarrassing herself, such as in "Showdown at Sherman High", when he heard her overcommitting to the megaphone announcement.

Octus/Newton

Family Crisis

Lance filled with unbearable anger.

Lance had initially viewed Octus as just an advanced form of technology the King provided to help them, however, his views of Octus change gradually the more they interact. Though at first perceiving him as a robot, Lance accepts that Octus is simply a living being with emotions who is learning to interact with the world and the people around him. Aside from viewing him as a friend, Octus additionally acts both as a father and a brother figure to Lance and Ilana, intervening when needed to help them get along, while also acting as the one with the most logical sense to help them through a crisis, being described as the "mind" of the group. Unlike most, Octus is not very judgmental towards others and is primarily the most honest, allowing Lance to be more open with Octus and the easiest for him to communicate with the majority of the time, often times leading to very deep conversations with valuable advice towards one another. Lance inevitably becomes extremely protective of Octus the more he views him as family.

In the episode "A Family Crisis", Lance thinks about the great and not so great moments he's had with Octus, cherishing every moment he has experienced with him as every bit of his memories puts a smile on his face. Before the mysterious creature is able to attack him, Octus swoops in to try and save him. Lance watches in horror as the mysterious creature drains Octus of all his energy and leaves him as an empty core. After Lance grabs the robotic part of Octus and escapes to Solomon's ship, he is thrown into a fit of mournful rage as he realizes Octus in unable to be revived, perceiving his lifeless core as the death of another loved one in his life, which ultimately prompts him to take control of Solomon's ship to unleash a fury of weaponry to destroy the station, along with the creature still inside, in a final act of revenge for "killing" Octus. Over the following weeks, Lance tries to make sense of Octus's machinery in order to find some way to fix him, but realizes he simply does not have the proper knowledge to repair him.

Later in "A New Beginning" Octus is revived by an unknown benefactor and comes to Lance's and Ilana's side. Lance, though in disbelief over Octus's return, is overjoyed knowing he was able to be revived thanks to the help of G3.

Edward

Edward is/was Lance's father. Lance loved his father very much and was very upset when he disappeared. Lance is shown to be very defensive about his father and anyone who tries to insult him, even being willing to fight anyone who tries, such as Baron, the first student he encounters at the academy in "Shadows of Youth". Although everyone around him had come to terms with his fathers disappearance as an indication of his inevitable death, Lance could not accept the possibility of his father never returning and assumed he would in fact return one day to take him home from the academy, as it was a common occurrence for him to see his father disappear abruptly, only to reappear just as easily. However, upon facing countless scolding's and punishments from others who were quick to punish him and believe the false accusations against him, Lance had accepted that his father was gone and would never come back to take him home and return him to his happier life. Lance still keeps a framed picture of him and his father hugging, but had placed it in a drawer in his younger years as a sign of resentment for his father risking to test the machinery he invented on himself, which led to his disappearance and left him all alone to live out a life of struggle.

Kristin

A Gothic girl that seems to show interest in Lance due to their similar loner personalities. Kristin is the only one on Earth whom Lance has shown interest in since his arrival. When they first met at the "Scary Mary Party", he was surprised to learn that she had previously attempted to greet him at school, but due to his extreme antisocial tendencies and constant dissatisfaction in attending school while knowing Galaluna was being invaded, he had ignored her just as much as the others at school. Despite not yet knowing much about her, he was amused and intrigued by her stating they were possibly soul mates (though in a tone that could suggest this was a joke at the time), something he smiles to upon hearing. Unlike his other school peers, Lance enjoyed Kristin's company at the "Scary Mary Party", being willing to stay with her until needing to leave abruptly when noticing Octus's alarmed reaction to a possible threat in the are. Moments later, Lance returns to the party, but Kristin is nowhere to be found for the remainder of the night, implying that she had left the area not long after Lance left to investigate the crash. Later on in school, he says "hey" to her in the hall, something that seems to make her quite happy. In "Under the Three Moons", Lance spots Kristin at the Mall, on the opposite escalator next to him, although she doesn't notice his presence, Lance maintains a prolonged stare at her until she is no longer within view, making it obvious he wants to ask her to the homecoming dance. Lance spots Kristin at school once again, alone in the school gym, and is rendered speechless after watching her practicing martial arts. Unable to properly speak in front of her, Lance quickly comments on her martial arts and states her form is all wrong. After a moment of sparring with her, Lance ultimately does ask her to the homecoming dance but is seemingly upset and saddened when she answers 'no', as school dances are not her thing.

The King of Galaluna

Despite being aware of the King's lifelong friendship with his father, Lance had trouble accepting the King into his life the more he had attempted to take on the role of his paternal figure after his fathers disappearance. Despite respecting the King as the ruler of Galaluna, Lance had grown somewhat angered towards him for his unwillingness to sort through the false accusations that were pinned against him growing up. However, upon the Mutraddi invasion, Lance learns to make peace with the King when his word about the invasion, the coup and his advice to escape the planet is taken seriously, even more so as he is solely entrusted with the duty to protect Ilana, whom the King considers to be Galaluna's last hope should he fail to stop the invasion.

General Modula

The former general of the planet Galaluna. Although little is known about Lance's history with Modula, he was aware of the general's lifelong friendship with his father. In "Shadows of Youth", it is revealed that Modula was the one who had taken the liberty of enrolling Lance into the military training academy when he was a child, implying that he had obtained some sense of custody over Lance after his fathers disappearance, thanks in part to the King's help. Lance does not interact with Modula again until the end of the academic year, after his battle with Baron, a fight that left Modula no other choice but to stop as their use of the Manus armor had caused too much destruction and threatened the lives of all those who attended the end of the year ceremony. It's unknown if Lance interacted with Modula over his years in the Military, but due to the ongoing false accusations he was blamed for, it is implied that Lance held a sense of resentment over the general for not sorting through the false accusations and instead seeing fit he be punishing for them. Years later, when Modula began his invasion over Galaluna, Lance never has a chance to interact with the general upon his escape from Galaluna alongside Octus and Ilana, leaving him to believe the invasion over Galaluna was entirely the fault of the Mutraddi rather than the general he thought had died in combat long ago.

Solomon

Just as every other Earthling, Lance had viewed Solomon as another threat, even more so the moment he discovered Solomon and the entire G3 were actively spying on them throughout their lives on Earth. Despite clashing with each other, Lance and Solomon learn to set aside their differences the more they realize their shared goal to stop the Aliens who are attacking Earth. Thanks to Solomon's efforts to provide as much aid as possible to help Lance and Ilana during their struggles and grief after Octus is drained by the mysterious creature back in "A Family Crisis", Lance becomes willing to trust Solomon a little more. After discovering that the G3 had succeeded in reviving Octus, Lance is now willing to see Solomon as an ally. Lance has taken note of Solomon's fighting techniques and is shocked to discover they are identical to the techniques taught on Galaluna, but is unsure of how Solomon was able to learn such techniques given he is from Earth.

Kimmy Mysner

Due to Kimmy's arrogance, Lance did not see her as a trustworthy person upon their first introduction, however, for Octus's sake, he was willing to tolerate Kimmy spending time with their group. Thanks to Octus helping Kimmy realize her true intellectual potential, Lance takes note of Kimmy gradually giving up her former arrogant nature, becoming more kind and considerate of others and being willing to do what she can to inform him, Ilana, and Octus of social gatherings with other peers, such as "The Scary Mary party" and helping them understand normal Earth customs, such as prom. Although Lance accepts that Kimmy has become an entirely different person from when they first met, he was initially surprised and confused by Octus and Kimmy's romantic relationship, as Lance had previously assumed a robot like Octus was incapable of feeling emotions such as love and that their relationship was simply a façade on Octus's part. As Lance realizes that Octus is not just some robot and is a living being of his own, he learns to understand and accept that what Octus feels for Kimmy is real and that they do in fact love each other.

Disenfranchised band

A small band of three people. Lance takes note of the band's performance during the school lunch session, but while the majority of the students find the band's music unentertaining and annoying, Lance enjoys it and takes an interest in playing guitar. Despite his attempts to learn on his own, he is unable to find a proper melody until the band's leader discovers him practicing and provides him tips to learn how to play better. Lance is quickly accepted into the band upon discovering he enjoys the same music as they do. However, Lance's popularity quickly intervenes as word gets around that he has now joined the Disenfranchised band. After what is considered to be the bands most successful and biggest performance, Lance is shocked to learn that the band had unanimously decided to kick him out of the band as his popularity has garnered to much unwanted attention from people who are only interested in him and have no real knowledge of music, let alone any interest in the music they play. Although Lance believes they should not care whether people like the band's music or not, the band ultimately realize that Lance will likely never understand their views and appreciation of music. Although saddened to learn he has been rejected, he attempts to move on nonetheless while still maintaining his new found interest in playing guitar on his own.

Mike Chan

An illegal street racer who regularly has a run in with the law enforcement and causes a series of police chases which result in terrible crashes, he is simply referred to as "The White Dragon" by his car's print as his identity has eluded police officers. Lance develops a bitter rivalry with Chan the more he comes into contact with him. While Lance tries to steer away from Chan, Chan makes it clear that he has every intention to insult and cause conflict with Lance as he considers Lance his problem, even going as far as attempting to sabotage their race so Lance could be harmed or possibly killed in a fatal car crash caused by one of his other gang members. Although Chan attempts to once again sabotage Lance by tracking him down in the midst of his driving test, Lance manages to evade him long enough during an Alien attack until Chan is unable to evade the damage on the road and falls into a ditch. Later, Lance is happy to see Chan is finally arrested by the police officer in charge of investigating him. Despite Chan's promises to confront Lance again, the officer informs him he won't get the chance until after his 5-10 year jail sentence.

Jason

A boy from school whom Ilana befriended at "The Scary Mary Party". Although Lance does not perceive Jason as a threat, he is not amused by him either, let alone has any interest in interacting with him as much as Ilana has. He does however understand that Ilana gets along with Jason the best out of anyone in the school and is thus far the most important relationship Ilana has managed to develop given her bubbly personality has warded off any other students from befriending her.

Barbara

A woman from their block who regularly attempts to interact with them. Although not a bad person, Lance finds her annoying as her nosy personality leads her to regularly show up unannounced, oftentimes during moments when their true alien origins are exposed. However, given she is oblivious to everything she has seen, assuming Octus's technology is just house décor and Tashy was just an exotic pet, Lance does not consider her enough of a threat to take action against.

Tashy 497(Tarax, Mushy, 497)

A small docile alien Lance becomes fond of. Before his agreed name, Lance had named it Tarax, after a great Galalunian general. Despite his initial caution, Lance takes a liking to the alien and what he personally believed was his tough little guy attitude. After a moment of playful wrestling, Lance ultimately bonds with the alien and decides to accept him into his life as a treasured member of the family. Lance later bickers with Ilana over what his name should be and who has the right to keep him, but is devastated in learning that their new beloved member is in fact a bomb sent by the Mutraddi, meant to explode in a crash to destroy the Earth, but doomed to die none the less after being saved as the Earth's environment had left him sick. After making the heart wrenching decision to let his new found companion die in space so as to not destroy the Earth, Lance is enraged over once again losing another beloved member of his life, but accepts there was simply nothing he could do to save him. Later, as Lance is still feeling mournful over the loss of Tarax, Octus reveals to him and Ilana that their little companion had become a new cosmic formation after dying in space. As a scientist permits him, Ilana and Octus to name the new formation, Lance immediately and excitedly says it should be Tarax. But after consoling Ilana, and Octus, he agrees to name him Tashi 497, a combination of all their names.

Arthur

A chubby boy who used to be Lance's roommate at the military training academy. Despite Arthurs sarcastic remarks upon their introduction, Lance quickly warms up to him and is willing to see Arthur as his potential new friend during his time at the academy. However, Lance later realizes that Arthur is not very brave and is also a target of Baron's bullying. Lance attempts to defend Arthur and encourage him to stand up for himself, but was sad to learn that Arthur had decided to blame him for reigniting Baron's attempts to bully him to an extreme degree. During the end of the term war game, Lance tries to help Arthur evade an attack, but grows frustrated over his unwillingness to trust him even a little.

Baron

A prestigious student from the military training academy who became Lance's bitter rival. Lance developed an imitate hatred for Baron upon his arrival to the academy, quickly realizing and experiencing his cruel and insensitive nature. In a fit of rage, Lance punched Baron for insulting his father, but was overpowered and outnumbered as Baron retaliated and willingly proceeded to beat him in the rain along with the aid of his two subordinates. Because of his willingness to defend himself, Lance became Baron's primary target. Lance was shocked to discover Baron's ongoing cruelty over weaker students like Arthur, and the lack of attention Baron's cruel actions were given as a result of his positive reputation among the staff of the academy for being one of the academy's top students. Despite Baron's control over the students and ongoing manipulation of the staff, Lance refused to fall into line and abide by Baron’s demands to leave the school, showing no fear in continuing to defend himself despite the humiliation and struggle it would cause him. Lance grew ever more angered and frustrated over the false accusations Baron, and the staff who favored him, pinned against him. Despite Lance’s attempts to clear his name, Baron was never held responsible for the misdeeds he caused, leaving Lance to be reprimanded for Baron’s actions. Although Lance learned to better evade and outsmart Baron, Lance was inevitably blinded by his hatred when Baron quickly attempted to kill him for winning the medal of excellence. Near the end of his biggest fight with Baron at the end of the school year, Lance became irrational and quickly took on a Manus armor to gain a greater advantage, not yet realizing the destruction it caused and the danger it nearly inflicted on others until General Modula stopped the fight. Lance's disdain for Baron remained with him to the end when discovering that Baron would be pardoned for his misdeeds thanks to the help of his wealthy family.

Julius Steel

A high-ranking General in charge of many of the U.S. armed forces. Unlike Solomon who kept his investigation of them hidden, Lance was quickly aware of Steel's ongoing efforts to find and capture him, Ilana and Octus. Due to his extreme methods and military force, Lance considers him enough of a threat to avoid as much as possible, but is shocked that a man with so much military power has information about his base available online for anyone to see. When he discovers Steel's robot could contain a core strong enough to possibly revive Octus, he is willing to risk sneaking into his heavily armed base. After reforming Titan in "A new Beginning", Lance later helps save Steel from an alien.
